What to Expect with a Wisdom Tooth Extraction

We always keep a close eye on the wisdom teeth during regular checkups so we can hopefully remove them before they cause any problems. However, for patients already experiencing symptoms, the first step of the tooth extraction process is to X-ray the mouth and figure out the positions of the teeth. The lack of space can often cause them to erupt in unexpected ways, including sideways!

Most of the time, the wisdom teeth actually become stuck while trying to come in, or impacted. Impacted teeth require what is called a surgical extraction in order to be removed. This involves numbing the treatment area and getting any gum or bone tissue that is still blocking the tooth out of the way before extracting the tooth itself.

A little soreness, swelling, and bleeding is common after a wisdom tooth extraction, but most patients are able to resume their normal diet and daily routine within a week or so.
