What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease, also known as periodontitis, is a bacterial infection caused by the accumulation of substances like plaque, tartar, and food debris. When sugars and carbohydrates mix with your saliva, it forms a sticky film called plaque that coats your teeth, creating the perfect environment for harmful oral bacteria to thrive in. As they begin to accumulate, they release waste containing toxins that cause gum inflammation, irritation, swelling, and bleeding. As  your mouth becomes overrun with bacterial waste, your gum tissue will begin breaking down and separating from your teeth, creating small pus-filled pockets. When it reaches its advanced stages, this disease has serious permanent side effects that can’t be reversed, such as tooth loss.

How Can We Treat Your Gum Disease?

At Angel Smile Dental Care, we offer multiple customized treatment plans to combat your gum disease, depending on the stage that it’s in. These include:

  • Scaling and Root Planing. When we notice the early signs of gum disease, we may recommend this two-part deep cleaning to clear harmful oral bacteria from your mouth and provide you with some relief. During the scaling process, our dentists will clear your teeth of all tartar and plaque that are attracting bacteria along with any pockets that have formed between your gums and teeth. They’ll then reattach your gums to your teeth to stop the disease from progressing and prevent any further damage.
  • Antibiotic Therapy. We may also prescribe antibiotics to help kill the harmful bacteria present in your mouth. This can be in the form of a topical ointment, pill, or mouthwash for easy application. Paired with daily brushing and flossing, antibiotic therapy can help stop the progression of gum disease and make your gums healthy and pink again.

If you’re suffering from the side effects of gum disease, we will be more than happy to provide you with relief from your discomfort and prevent the condition from destroying your oral health. For a custom-tailored treatment plan, visit us today!
