What You Need to Know About Dental Insurance
While there are a lot of similarities between dental and health insurance, there is one major difference patients need to know. While health insurance is geared towards helping people deal with sudden serious problems (like a heart attack or car accident), dental insurance is actually focused more on prevention. Most plans are designed to help patients afford routine basic care intended to find and treat minor problems during their earliest stages, saving patients from developing serious issues that will require more expensive procedures to fix.
How Your Benefits Work
While every dental insurance plan is different from person to person, most have the same basic framework when it comes to their benefits, and it looks something like this:
- Checkups, cleanings, X-rays, dental sealants, and fluoride treatments are covered 80-100%.
- Fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, root canal therapy, and extractions are covered 45-75%.
- Teeth whitening and porcelain veneers are NOT covered because they are deemed elective.
- Orthodontic care may be partially covered as well, though some plans only apply for patients under 18.
With this in mind, the best way to maximize your plan is to simply get your two recommended checkups and cleanings each year. Your insurance will mostly or completely pay for these appointments, and they’ll save you from developing cavities and gum disease in the first place.

Our dental office is in-network with the vast majority of dental insurance plans, giving patients access to even bigger discounts, but for those with out-of-network plans, they can still use their policy to save significantly on their dental care with us.
